DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH ACT USED BY THE TEACHER AND THE STUDENTS IN VOCATIONAL SCHOOL CLASSROOM

ABSTRAK
Abstract. This research investigated the use of direct and indirect speech between the students and the teacher in vocational school. This research used a qualitative method in which the researcher identified the utterances between the students and the teacher in the classroom, especially to know direct and indirect speech used by them. The results of the show, the teacher often used direct speech act in giving a command to the students. Then, the teacher also used indirect speech act to request the students do something but the teacher put an implicit message/advice in the utterance. However, the students seemed to use indirect speech act when they requested something to the teacher and they preferred to use indirect speech act when they wanted to deliver command or request to their friends. Finally, it is suggested for language teachers to introduce how to use direct and indirect speech to their students in a good way. Besides, this study suggests further research about the use of direct and indirect speech from other perspective.
