AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ERRORS IN ENGLISH COMPOSITION

ABSTRAK

The descriptive research has objectives of identifying, describing, and classifying the errors in written English made by the English students of S1 program of FKIP UNILA Lampung. The sample comprises the 1994 S1 students of the English department of FKIP UNILA Lampung, 44 in all. The instrument used to elicit the errors was a free composition test of about 300 words. The test was administered to 44 students who were in the sevent semester. The focus of the study was on the morphological and syntatical errors caused by interlingual and intralingual interference.

The result shows that there are 833 errors in the 44 compositions. Out of the 833 errors, there are 115 errors of addition (13.80%), 350 errors of omission (42.02%), 365 errors of substitution (44.18%). The classification of errors based on morphology and syntax indivates that 149 are morphological errors (17.89%) and 684 are syntactic errors (82.11%). In morphology, the highest type of error is simple past tense (82 occurences/55.03%) and the second highest is the passive voice (33 occurences/22.14%). In syntax, the highest is plural inflection (111 occurences/116.23%), the other high errors are to be (104 occurences/115.20%) and preposition (92 occurences/13.45%)

The classification of errors based on interlingual and intralingual sources shows that there are 320 interlingual errors/38.42% (54/16.88% morphological and 266/83.12% syntactic errors), and 513 intralingual errors/61.58% (95/18.52% morphological and 418/81.48% syntactic errors). The chi square formula was used to determine the significance of the frequency difference. The result shows that the difference between morphological and sytactic errors is significant at .001 level for the final figure 343.61 (df1=10.83). The result of interlingual and intralingual frequency difference is also significant at .001 level (df 1=10.83). Further examination was conducted and the result shows that it is significant on both morphology and syntax.

From the findings we can conclude that the most frequent type of errors in the intralingual errors in syntax, and the most frequent types of grammatical categories are pluralization, to be and preposition.
